Diapering....Cloth or Disposable?

30 years ago after giving birth to my only son, I made the choice of using cloth diapers. This choice was actually made for me due to financial reasons. I must admit that disposables would have been a welcome delight at times. Rinsing, treating and washing diapers everyday wasn't always a joy. Changing and tossing probably would have been!

Today parents still have a choice for diapers and many are choosing cloth over disposable. Why? I believe there are a few reasons for the choice. Finances still play a part. Pricey at the start, the overall cost is still extremely less than years of disposables. The cloth diapers today also have a much better design than when I purchased the flat folds. Velcro and snap closures with adjustable sizing, bright colors and patterns for cuteness, and liners that make for easier washing and care. Many agree that cloth against the skin is far more healthy than the paper disposables. With fabulous fabrics in cotton, organics and flannels, parents get a wide variety to choose from. Companies such as Bum Genius and Fuzzi Bunz have numerous designs as do handmade diapers.

There is something to be said for disposables. With both parents working in many homes, time plays a key factor. Disposables save a lot of time. Traveling or just being out and about also can be made much easier with disposable diapers. No hauling bags for dirty diapers or rinsing in a public restroom. Change and toss. How great is that! While these diapers are costly, they are also convenient. There is a wide variety of disposable diaper companies such as Huggies, Pampers and many more. All sizes can easily be purchased with many different features for both boys and girls.

Choosing how to diaper is a personal choice and both have advantages as well as disadvantages. Either way the most important thing is keeping babies healthy and happy. Make sure to keep those baby butts clean and dry!
