Boutique Brands vs Name Brands

Being in the clothing resale business we are always faced with the latest trends. This brings to mind a question. Do we really need to spend hundreds of dollars on boutique clothing and accessories for our babies and toddlers or are are we better off purchasing from long standing companies such as Carters? How long will they actually be worn? How does the clothing stand up in wash and wear?

Boutique clothing is extremely fun to look at and purchase. That's a given. Is it worth it in the long run? We have found that many boutique brands have some issues. Bright colors fade easily even when washed properly, sizes tend to run smaller, or larger in some cases, than other known brands, cost is virtually much higher, and durability just isn't there. Purchasing items from boutique lines may be right for a specific special occasion, but for everyday wear it just doesn't seem feasible. The cost alone keep many from purchasing clothing from these boutique lines. While the fabrics may be harder to find, it still shouldn't surpass the cost of a regular brand name by the extremity in which it does.

Brand name clothing from long standing companies such as Carters still hold the greatest value in wear, tear and cost. With proper washing the colors stay bright, the sizes run true, and the price still stays within reason. Cuteness isn't lost on these clothes either. Many fabulous items can be obtained from everyday clothing companies.

The bottom line is, do we buy boutique clothing for ourselves or our kids? Do we feel different knowing they are wearing a $100.00 dress vs a $30.00 dress? Will the item be something they can wear over and over or is it something that is worn once and shoved to the back of the closet in favor of the newest trend? Truth be told, the child doesn't know the difference and doesn't care. Boutique clothes are for adults, not kids. Fashion trends are for adults, not kids.

Because we are a baby and toddler resale shop we see many parents going back to the long standing companies that were around when they were kids. We believe that is because, over the years, they have come to realize that their dollar goes much farther in purchasing cute, durable clothing rather than the "be careful, it's boutique" kind of clothing. They don't have to sigh at the price and kick themselves later for actually paying it. All in all, it's a good thing. Our kids out grow their clothes usually way before they can wear them out.
