Life Changes

As we get older we start to gain a much narrower perspective on what actually is important in life. Lately I have found myself wanting more time to enjoy simple things and less time acquiring things. I watch my granddaughter in her exersaucer, bouncing up and down, with a big smile on her face and realize that her smile is one of those simple things. Seeing my nephew's eyes light up when he comes across a new train or holds a duckling at the County Fair are also those simple things I have come to enjoy. These "moments" have certainly started outweighing the things we think are important as younger adults. It's nice to have "things" but smiles, hugs and excitement can't be purchased. I think I will make a point each day of cherishing those moments before they disappear! Life changes can be what we make them. I think I will take my life changes and fill them with smiles, hugs and excitement. :o)

Boutique Brands vs Name Brands

Being in the clothing resale business we are always faced with the latest trends. This brings to mind a question. Do we really need to spend hundreds of dollars on boutique clothing and accessories for our babies and toddlers or are are we better off purchasing from long standing companies such as Carters? How long will they actually be worn? How does the clothing stand up in wash and wear?

Boutique clothing is extremely fun to look at and purchase. That's a given. Is it worth it in the long run? We have found that many boutique brands have some issues. Bright colors fade easily even when washed properly, sizes tend to run smaller, or larger in some cases, than other known brands, cost is virtually much higher, and durability just isn't there. Purchasing items from boutique lines may be right for a specific special occasion, but for everyday wear it just doesn't seem feasible. The cost alone keep many from purchasing clothing from these boutique lines. While the fabrics may be harder to find, it still shouldn't surpass the cost of a regular brand name by the extremity in which it does.

Brand name clothing from long standing companies such as Carters still hold the greatest value in wear, tear and cost. With proper washing the colors stay bright, the sizes run true, and the price still stays within reason. Cuteness isn't lost on these clothes either. Many fabulous items can be obtained from everyday clothing companies.

The bottom line is, do we buy boutique clothing for ourselves or our kids? Do we feel different knowing they are wearing a $100.00 dress vs a $30.00 dress? Will the item be something they can wear over and over or is it something that is worn once and shoved to the back of the closet in favor of the newest trend? Truth be told, the child doesn't know the difference and doesn't care. Boutique clothes are for adults, not kids. Fashion trends are for adults, not kids.

Because we are a baby and toddler resale shop we see many parents going back to the long standing companies that were around when they were kids. We believe that is because, over the years, they have come to realize that their dollar goes much farther in purchasing cute, durable clothing rather than the "be careful, it's boutique" kind of clothing. They don't have to sigh at the price and kick themselves later for actually paying it. All in all, it's a good thing. Our kids out grow their clothes usually way before they can wear them out.

She's Here!

My granddaughter made her debut on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th at 2:31 pm.  She weighed 6 lbs, 15 oz and 19" long.  Born with lots of dark silky hair, her mom's heart shaped mouth and daddy's chubby cheeks.  Mom had a rough time and wound up having an emergency C-Section but all are doing wonderful now.  Mom and Dad have named their little girl Daniella Kathleen.  Looking up the meaning of the name we found this answer:

From the Hebrew for "God is my judge".  She is as free as the air and will not be held down.  A beautiful butterfly.

Knowing both of her parents, this will probably hold true for this little girl.  I'm looking forward to watching her grow and also to see the joy she will bring her parents.  By the way......yes,  I will be one of those grandma's that shows pictures every chance I get so I'll start now :o)  As you can see, she had a lot of people awaiting her birth including Grandma Kathleen (her namesake) and Aunt Cindy who will be adding her own addition to the family in a few short weeks!  What fun these babies will have growing up together.

I Saw....

The day is almost here that I will become a grandmother. Over the last few weeks I have looked over my life to see if there is something I missed along the way. There isn't. I raised a fine son and watched him grow into a good man. I look back and remember that:

I saw his little face when he was born and couldn't have been happier.
I saw him develop a profound love of reading and great imagination.
I saw his struggle with everyday kid things and learn to get through them on his own.
I saw his first broken heart as a teenager.
I saw his growing independence.
I saw him become a fabulous musician.
I saw him graduate from high school and then college with excellent grades.
I saw him get his first apartment.
I saw him find the love of his life.
I saw him marry her.

Soon I will be able to add:

I saw him holding his own daughter.

When I look back I know I haven't missed the important things. I watched and saw all the things that help make him what he is today. When I see my granddaughter for the first time I will know that (as my son says), my bucket list will be complete. I will have seen all of the things that are important to me. I can be happy about that. :o)

Is Your Child Ready?

Think your child is ready for potty training? There are questions you need to ask yourself before proceeding.

Do they show an interest in the potty chair or toilet?
Can he/she understand a follow directions?
Does your child stay dry for 2 hours or more?
Can your child tell you when he/she needs to go?
Is your child uncomfortable and let you know when they are wet or soiled?
Can your child pull his/her pants down by themselves?

If you can answer yes to many of these questions then your child is probably ready to start training. Many reports on what age is appropriate for training state that the usual age is between 18-36 months. This doesn't hold true for all children and should be considered when making this decision. Some children develop slower and may not be ready. Doctors recommend not pushing the issue because starting too early will hinder the process and in the end it will take longer to train. If there are major changes taking place within your household then wait. Better to hold off until the change is made and the focus can be on the training. If you think your child is ready, be prepared.

Place a potty chair in the bathroom.
Schedule potty times throughout the day.
Pay attention to your child's mannerisms and expressions.
Keep babysitters, caregivers and others aware of your child's times and expressions.

In our opinion it is best to train using underwear, not diapers. Yes, you will have accidents and cleanups but in the long run, removing the diaper will allow the child to feel uncomfortable and therefore want to eliminate on the potty instead of their pants. Accidents should be treated lightly and without punishment. Potty training is another thing your child must conquer and it isn't accomplished overnight. At the same time, praise should be used when they do use the potty. Incentives can help in this instance such as, stickers, small treats etc... Making a big deal over what they just did is important! Get excited! Do a happy dance! Reading a "potty" book while your child sits is another thing they look forward to. It becomes less of a chore for the child and more fun. Nighttime training will usually take longer and protective coverings should be placed on the bed. This too will come when your child has more control over their bladder.

Last, but not least, don't push it. Forcing a child who has no interest or desire to train will undoubtedly cause distress. It serves no purpose to either the child or the parent to keep at it if it isn't working. Stop, take a deep breath and try again in a few months!

Do's & Don'ts of Baby Bedding

Over the years experts have come to realize that bare minimum is best for baby bedding. While many crib ensembles are well designed and beautiful, less is still more for awhile. Crib bedding should be comfortable and attractive but more than anything else....safe. Reducing clutter in the crib reduces the risk of choking and breathing restriction. Things to consider when preparing your crib for your new baby include:

Never use a pillow under baby's head.
Always put baby to sleep on his/her back.
Remove all stuffed animals.
Refrain from using blankets of any type.

Purchase a firm mattress with mandated measurements of 27.25 inches X 51.5 inches by no more than 6 inches thick.
Use snug fitting mattress pad and crib sheets.
If using bumper around crib, make sure it is tied securely in at least 6 locations.
Remove bumper when child is able to pull self up so he/she will not use to stand on.
Remove plastic coverings from mattresses.

The bottom line is, while we would love to decorate a crib from the beginning with ultra plush bedding, it is not safe to do so. Wait until your child is past the helpless age to deck out those sleeping places. There are many years to come for doing so and safety should be the number one priority from the beginning.

The Allure of Birthstones

Birthstones have been a source of fascination for many, many years. They can be traced back to Biblical times in the story of Aaron and the breastplate adorned with 12 precious stones. Birthstones are linked with the months in the year and are said to hold healing and magical powers. They also coincide with traits, each possessing a specific trait for each month. They have been described as "a gift of precious material (jewelry, gemstones) that symbolizes the month of birth in the Gregorian calendar. It is sometimes also called birthday stone".

Today we still celebrate the birthstone, along with their co-parts of traits, zodiac sign and birth month flowers. Each hold significant allure. It is an intimate representation of our personality regardless of it's beauty or cost. Each month will also carry with it a poem. Combining the stone with the trait, we can see that birthstones still hold a magical place in our hearts and will continue to fascinate us with years worth of mystical yet modern nuances.

Diapering....Cloth or Disposable?

30 years ago after giving birth to my only son, I made the choice of using cloth diapers. This choice was actually made for me due to financial reasons. I must admit that disposables would have been a welcome delight at times. Rinsing, treating and washing diapers everyday wasn't always a joy. Changing and tossing probably would have been!

Today parents still have a choice for diapers and many are choosing cloth over disposable. Why? I believe there are a few reasons for the choice. Finances still play a part. Pricey at the start, the overall cost is still extremely less than years of disposables. The cloth diapers today also have a much better design than when I purchased the flat folds. Velcro and snap closures with adjustable sizing, bright colors and patterns for cuteness, and liners that make for easier washing and care. Many agree that cloth against the skin is far more healthy than the paper disposables. With fabulous fabrics in cotton, organics and flannels, parents get a wide variety to choose from. Companies such as Bum Genius and Fuzzi Bunz have numerous designs as do handmade diapers.

There is something to be said for disposables. With both parents working in many homes, time plays a key factor. Disposables save a lot of time. Traveling or just being out and about also can be made much easier with disposable diapers. No hauling bags for dirty diapers or rinsing in a public restroom. Change and toss. How great is that! While these diapers are costly, they are also convenient. There is a wide variety of disposable diaper companies such as Huggies, Pampers and many more. All sizes can easily be purchased with many different features for both boys and girls.

Choosing how to diaper is a personal choice and both have advantages as well as disadvantages. Either way the most important thing is keeping babies healthy and happy. Make sure to keep those baby butts clean and dry!

Baby Proofing Your Space

Preparing your home for a new baby is best accomplished before is is actually needed. Being a step ahead will insure preventable accidents, the leading cause of injuries and deaths in toddling tikes according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Baby proofing should include blocking stairways, locking up cleaning products and medicines, clearing away accessible cords such as drapery and blind cords, electrical and appliance cords, securing furniture and media devices that could overturn, plugging electrical outlets and purchasing door knob and cabinet locks.

Most department or hardware stores carry all of the devices needed for baby proofing.All are easily attached and can prevent a disaster before it happens. Baby gates come in a variety of materials and sizes and easily adjust to to doorways and stairways.

Last but not least, common sense is the best tool we can use for determining safety. If there is something present that could cause harm.....remove it! Better to have clear paths with less temptations for new, curious little ones. Thinking ahead is the best approach and should be on the list of what to do before baby arrives.
